Obituary as per Cairns Funeral Mass Booklet

Fr Patrick Martin Jones was born in Miles, Queensland on the 29th July 1934.

On 31st December 1955 a 21 year old Patrick M Jones wrote to The Most Rev T.V. Cahill D.D., Ph.D. Volunteering to study for the priesthood for the Cairns Diocese. On the 1st July 1962 he was ordained a priest in St Mary's Kingaroy after completing his studies at Banyo Seminary in Brisbane.

Fr Pat's appointments in this diocese started as a curate in Atherton for three years and then North Cairns for two years.

His first parish was Cooktown (eight years) where he was the first diocesan priest after generations of Augustinians. He was then appointed to Ravenshoe and for the next 11 years was energetic in building churches and schools. In fact the church in Ravenshoe was built from the winnings of his famous greyhound called Stationmaster (after his father who worked for Queensland railways and was station master in a number of remote places in Queensland, particularly in the far north of this Diocese.)

Fr Pat then went on to serve in the Gordonvale parish for eight years before he volunteered for Weipa and then Cooktown / Weipa. He was also part-time police chaplain in the Peninsular area and has done good work with the members of the police service and their families.

In 1999 Fr Pat volunteered to work for two years in remote Western Australia and was certainly appreciated for the work he did in the communities from Kumunurra / Wyndham parish. Fr Pat was a man of many parts and was also very generous.

Fr Pat died suddenly on Thursday 18th February 2010 in the Wesley Hospital Brisbane. Family, friends, priests and police celebrated his life with a Requiem Mass at Our Lady of Mt Carmel, Coorparoo on Monday 22nd February before his body was flown back to Cairns for burial in the Martyn St Cemetery in Cairns.
